Walter Huston

The plaque, apparently located here in this parkette at 354 College Street, appears to be missing. According to Heritage Toronto, it's a Toronto Historical Board plaque and the text of the plaque says:

Walter Huston, star of Broadway and Hollywood, was born in Toronto, 6 April 1884, and raised near here at 11 Major St. At the age of sixteen, he made his first stage appearance in a minstrel show at Massey Hall, joined a local repertory group, and later, in vaudeville, toured Canada and the United States. In the 1920s Huston came into prominence on Broadway as a dramatic actor and became famous for his rendition of "September Song." He worked in a number of films with his son, screen writer and director, John Huston. In 1948 both won academy awards for the film, "The Treasure of Sierra Madre."

Walter Huston was one of the greatest American stage & film actors. I've watched him on the movie screen since the mid 30's. My Mother & her sister were avid movie fans & would let me tag along when they would share a taxi cab to the downtown movie houses, the Keith Albee, Orpheum, Palace, Roxy,& Rialto.This gave them an uplift during the depression years. My Mom was told by many that she belonged in Hollywood. She could act out any part from the downtown movies & she had the looks of a Joan Crawford. // I was watching the movie, "Gabriel Over the White House." & clicked on the internet, Walter Huston, actor.That is how I found this site. Walter Huston was "outstanding" in The Treasure of Sierra Madre" & well deserved the acadamy award as well as his son, John received this award. Iam a regular viewer of the Turner Classic Movie Channel.Thanks for the information on Mr. Huston & his plaque in Toronto. Sincerely, James Parsons.
