Here's my review of the book
A Lion to Guard Us
by Clyde Robert Bulla.

What this book is about:

Imagine yourself in this situation: It is the year 1609. Your father left for the New World 3 years ago to try to build his family a home. All you have to remember him by is a brass door knocker in the shape of a lions head. You and your family are servants in the home of a rich family. Your life isn't easy but you are able to get along. Then your mother dies. You now must care for your younger brother and sister and you want to take them to the New World to find your father. But when you mention that to the lady of the house, you are thrown out into the streets with absolutely nothing.
This is the situation that young Amanda Freebold finds herself in. It looks hopeless but the three children are taken in by a kind doctor. The doctor is able to get all 4 of them onto a ship to America. The journey from London to the colony of Jamestown is long. The children suffer another terrible loss on the journey.
But then all the occupants of the ship are shipwrecked on the island of Bermuda. Things now are looking hopeless. Will Amanda and her siblings ever make it to the New World?
