I'm Allie, and I'm a 13 year old girl from Harleysville, PA, U.S.A. I recently reviewed "Ophelia," and filled this out there, but I'll add that I enjoy gardening, mostly for the purpose of getting wonderfully messy--the joy of being dirt-covered is incomparable! :)
Here's my review of the book
Carpe Diem
by Autumn Cornwell.
What this book is about:
Vassar Spore is a 16-year-old overachiever and meticulous planner who attends an expensive private school for academic nuts--her (many) goals in life include being valedictorian, getting a phD, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and setting up her own charity foundation. However, when bizarre, artsy Grandma Gerd blackmails Vassar's parents into forcing her to go along on a trip to Southeast Asia, these plans get turned upside down.
Vassar soon finds out that a few weeks in places like Malaysia don't need to be embellished in order to make an adventure for her English-credit novel--even if experience often comes in unpleasant forms. She meets a crowd of wildly unique people on her travels with a teenage Asian cowboy and Grandma Gerd herself, whose motto (the ultimate opposite of Vassar's planned lifestyle) is to "Live in the Moment", LIM for short. This trip results in a taste--no, a face full--of the local cultural "oddities," an explanation of The Big Secret (mysterious!), and one girl getting jolted into real life...and the way to live it.
What I think about this book:
Excellent! Vassar is a shallow, superficial person to begin with, but throughout the story, grows to become a great character--with the help of some truly wacky people. The description was superb, even if it was disgusting sometimes--lots about Southeast Asian plumbing (or non-plumbing)--and very realistic. Loads of fun to read!
