A Little Princess
by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
What this book is about:
Sarah Crewe lived the perfect life of a princess with her father who absolutely adores her. Her father, Captain Crewe, gives her everything - love, attention, lovely clothing, toys, books, and whatever else her heart desires. She is very mature for her 7 years of age and could easily pass for a 12-year-old. She is a wonderful storyteller and loves to read.
Then her father decides that she needs to spend more time with girls her own age. So Sarah is sent to Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies
Though Sarah misses her father terribly she gets along at Miss Minchin's quite well. She is the model student what with her stylish clothing and her smarts.
Her stories enchant the other girls including the scullery maid Becky, who is not supposed to have any contact with the young ladies at the school. But Sarah secretly befriends her along with Lotty, a small girl who's mother died before she came to school. And Sarah is happy now with her two good friends.
But then tragedy strikes a terrible blow upon Sarah; Captain Crewe has died. Sarah is now a penniless orphan.
And that is when Miss Minchin's true nature is revealed. Cold and cruel. And she is furious that Sarah is left on her hands.
So Sarah, who has spent her entire life living in luxury, is forced to become a scullery maid like Becky. The work is hard and she never gets enough to eat.
But, strangely enough, Sarah is able to put her best face forward at all times. And she pretends. She pretends that she still lives her princess life. But the conditions of life that she now suffers through begin to get through to her.
Then, something wonderful happens that changes her young life once again.
What I think about this book:
I love it. It is one of my favorite books that this author has written.
