Here's my review of the book
Toliver's Secret
by Esther Wood Brady.
What this book is about:
Ellen Toliver is a shy young colonial girl, living with her mother and her grandfather, trying to fit in with the other children.
But one day she learns that her grandfather is a patriot spy! And he is gravely injured on the day that he is due to take a secret message for General George Washington to Elizabethtown.
The only other person that her grandfather trusts to take the message is Ellen herself. And it all seems so simple; take a boat across New York Harbor to Elizabeth town with the message baked into a loaf of bread.
Ellen is terrified. She doesn't see how she can do it; she can't even stand up to the village bully. But her grandfather is counting on her, so she agrees.
Her mother cuts her hair and dresses her as a boy so that she'll blend in and Ellen sets off for the harbor. But things go horribly wrong: Ellen ends up in a boat filled with hungry British soldiers. Then her boat lands at the wrong town and Elizabethtown is miles away. But she is determined to get the message through so she sets out on foot toward the town.
But she'll face many many more obstacles before she gets there. And all of them force her to face her fears and be brave.
When she returns home, she is a changed girl.
Her story is one that will thrill you!
